The Hawaii Karate Museum was very fortunate to recently acquire an historic first edition, in excellent condition, of Karate-Do Kyohan (Karate-Do Master Text), by Gichin Funakoshi. In Japanese, the master text for a particular topic is called the Tora no Maki. In 1935, master Funikoshi published his third book: a master text titled karate-do kyohan. In Karate Do Kyohan (the master text) he writes that the reason for Hikite (translated it means the pulling hand) is to grab the oponents wrist and twist while pulling him off balance. These books and his art are a fitting legacy for this unassuming and gentle man. He also wrote “Karate-Do Kyohan” - The Master Text, the “handbook” of Shotokan and he wrote his autobiography, “Karate-Do: My Way of Life”. Nineteen kata (“kinds”) of karate-the artwork of self-defense without having weapons-are presented right here in full depth. Kusugi is reported to have declared to Funakoshi that Karate-do Kyohan was the master text of karate.
